Random thought on Sarajevo and Italy

When I heard that they played Miss Sarajevo the other night in Amsterdam, my first thought was that Bill Carter or maybe even Alma herself or someone else connected to the city of Sarajevo was at the show that night. That’s the kind of thing U2 does on occasion — a little tribute to someone in attendance — but it’s usually in the form of smaller snippets of songs, not a full-band setlist alteration.

Now we have news that they’re about to film a DVD in Milan.

U2 isn’t the type to add in a completely ignored gem from the past just a couple shows before a “Big Video Shoot” … unless they have a reason. So I’m thinking, maybe it’s nothing to do with who was at the Amsterdam show. Maybe it’s who might be at the Milan shows. Do you think Pavarotti himself might be involved?

The mind races…..

(First, I’ll acknowledge that you didn’t go as far as suggesting L.P. might sing.)

With that voice his old man gave him when he passed away, Bono doesn’t need Pavarotti on stage; I thought Bono sounded great singing Miss Sara1evo the other night!

I think the introduction of Miss Sarajevo at this point ties into one of Bono’s dedications - to the city of London. Song can be interpreted as the common (wo)man trying to grab at normalcy in times of strife. Resonates much more at present than Running to Stand Still which, even here in the US, people had some trouble with connecting to the troops in Iraq and elsewhere.

You may be on to something M2…

I wish I’d been in Amsterdam the other night, but since I wasn’t, I’d love it if they’d sing Miss Sarajevo again for the cameras.

I’ll take Bono with or without Pavarotti…but how cool would it be to see LP take the stage at a U2 gig - AND bring Miss Sarajevo out for a dance?!

Am I the only one who doesn’t really like this song? Give me RTSS over Miss Sarajevo any day.

Bono went on about ‘Europe’ when he announced the song. G8 in Europe. The Netherlands voting against a common European law. The tensions between muslims and and christians… I think that’s how they arrived at Miss Sarajevo.
