G8’s 50 Billion Dollar Pledge

It’s encouraging to see that the G8 Leaders have agreed to a 50 billion dollar package to help with the African poverty crisis.

British Prime Minster Tony Blair said, “The 50 billion dollar uplift in aid is a signal for a new deal on trade, (as is) the cancellation of debt of poorer nations, universal access to AIDS treatment and a commitment to a new peacekeeping force for Africa.”

As promised, I’ve posted a selection of my Live 8 photos to the @U2 Flickr group. Head on over to that page to view my contributions (mainly all of those cool signs I mentioned in my earlier blog).

Being there was certainly a thrill.

Lonely at the top

According to Billboard’s daily business report Paul McCartney and U2’s rendition of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” which opened Live 8 in London, is currently the No. 1 download on iTunes in the United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and Italy. Proceeds from the download sales are being donated to Live 8.

In other Live 8 news - The British Phonographic Industry is calling on eBay to tighten up its anti-piracy measures after thousands of pirated DVDs of Live 8 were listed at the auction web site just hours after the July 2 event concluded. “The unauthorized copies of Live 8 DVDs we have been told about have been taken down, because the sale of fake items is not permitted on eBay.co.uk,” eBay said in a statement. EMI holds the worldwide DVD rights to the Live 8 concerts.

80s Rock

79-year-old U2 fan

Thanks go out to Ayaz for giving all of us hope that we can be rockin’ out to great music well into our 80s. She is 79, hails from the Northeast part of the United States, and caught her 3rd U2 show at Croke Park recently. All of you Bonophiles out there - watch out! You’ve got competition! And in The End…

Greetings from Hyde Park -

Just got back from seeing Macca close the show and it’s after midnight. He was incredible - “Helter Skelter” was an especially nice surprise considering the published set list here didn’t mention it earlier in the day. And, although there was a HUGE delay before Pink Floyd took the stage, “Money” sounded pretty darn good too.

The crowd got very crazy toward the end, mostly near the back (I went back to my original standing place when I returned later in the day) and folks started little miniature bonfires around Kensington Park. When the first fire truck arrived it was still daylight, they put the fire out (as people snapped photos) and all was well. Then, a few hours later, (when the beer set in) the drunken concertgoers began grabbing limbs/leaves off of beautiful old trees around the park to start more fires. Not cool.

Enter more fireman. Enter the cops. More fires started, more fires put out. A ridiculous cycle of immature, disrespectful behavior. How disappointing considering the rest of the day had been so ideal.

To top it off, right as Pink Floyd left the stage, more troublemakers started throwing their empty beer bottles at the cops on the other side of the fence. As you can imagine, the cops called in for backup and soon we were facing a potential riot. Deciding I’d traveled too far to get injured for the cause, I hightailed it out of there and saw Sir Paul from behind a fence many miles away. Not ideal, but better than getting hit with flying bottles. He was worth sticking around for.

All in all, the good outweighed the bad - but now I’m reading some messages from home and I hear that MTV didn’t even show all of U2’s performance? I’m mortified. The DVD better be out by Christmas. Everyone in the world deserves to see what I got to see today. And wasn’t that the point?

I need to stew over this a bit longer, and get some long overdue sleep. I’ll do my best to post photos tomorrow.

From London,
Goodnight!

MTV and Live 8

I really tried to bite my tongue on a day like this, but the records need to show how bad the U.S. TV coverage is, and I need to vent. :-)

1) What’s with all the freakin’ commercials? Commercials are outnumbering songs by about 5-to-1 right now. I thought this was a concert?

2) On those rare occasions when a song is aired, could we PLEASE HAVE THE WHOLE SONG? I’m so desperate to hear a song in its entirety, any song, that I got angry when they cut out of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On a Prayer.” Jaysus!

3) You know you’re in trouble when the most intelligent person holding a microphone is John Norris. The hosts are just brain-dead.

There’s always the 2-hour highlight show tonight on ABC, though I’m not sure how optimistic I should be about that…….
