Hanging with Tony (and Elvis)

Bono, Elvis Costello, and Tony BennettThe new issue of TIME magazine features an interview about Tony Bennett’s upcoming duets album, Tony Bennett: Duets/An American Classic — no real Bono content in the article, but it’s a good read. It talks about the recording process, and how Bennett made sure all the duets were actually sung together face-to-face — not done over the phone, like Bono did his duet with Frank Sinatra in the early 90s.

If this is the first you’ve heard of Bono doing a duet with Tony Bennett, you can read about it on our @U2 news mailing list — which you really should be reading. :-)

Oh, the article does have a photo of Bono, Bennett, and Elvis Costello … reproduced here for your enjoyment.

Now Playing…U2

What do Nicole Kidman, James Blunt, Anderson Cooper and Jay-Z have in common? They all have U2 on their personal playlists.

Poking around the iTunes music store, I decided to peek in and see what some of my favorite celebrities are listening to (they have this cool category called “Celebrity Playlists” in the search sidebar). The more I looked, the more U2 I saw. I kept searching until I had looked at every single playlist and jotted down each and every reference to U2.

It didn’t surprise me that the boys came up that often, but what did surprise me were the songs that were chosen. I tallied them up and here are the results, starting with the most popular at the top (how many times they appeared on lists is the number in parentheses):

“Where The Streets Have No Name” (7)
“One” (7)
“Sunday Bloody Sunday” (3)
“Mysterious Ways” (3)
“New Year’s Day” (2)
“With Or Without You” (2)
“Vertigo” (2)
“40″ (1)
“Wire” (1)
“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” (1)
“Bullet The Blue Sky” (1)
“Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?” (1)
“The First Time” (1)
“Beautiful Day “(1)
“Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” (1)
“Walk On” (1)
“Kite” (1)
“Yahweh” (1)

I credit the popularity of “Streets” with its incomparable live presence, but I’m stunned at the absence of “All I Want Is You” and a few others.

Ladies and Gentlemen … Claytaldo!

ClaytaldoThis is too good to pass up, even if it is a bit late for the World Cup.

If you played for Brazil, what would your name be?

Adam ended up with the best name when I ran the whole band through it … CLAYTALDO!

As for me, I kinda like it: McGEEZO!

From “Wake Up” to “40″ a recap of U2006 on WBWC

U2006, the annual U2 marathon, on WBWC took place July 13th. The eighteen hour marathon of U2 music was peppered with guest interviews, a special premiere, and fan requests.

Tour Director Rocko Reedy called in to speak with U2006 co-hosts Todd Richards and Mary Cipriani. While Rocko didn’t have any specific information about the remaining dates of the Vertigo tour he did say the band really wants to do right by the fans who have tickets for the postponed shows. Rocko also shared the “real story” behind U2’s stage entrance during the Elevation tour. According to Rocko, during the first night of the tour, the house lighting technician missed his que to turn the lights off because he had gone to the bathroom. The technician just happened to get back to his spot and shut the lights off just when then band hit that first break in the song. U2 thought it was a brilliant entrance and decided to do it every night!

Todd and Mary premiered a new version of “Tower of Song” from the Leonard Cohen I’m Your Man soundtrack that will be released on July 25th.

Fan requests came in from every corner of the globe, Mary Cipriani said “We ended up hundreds of email requests and phone requests from all over North/South America, Europe, South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and even Hong Kong and Russia too!” The most requested song was Mercy, which of couldn’t be play because it’s an unreleased track. Other top requests(in order): Bad, Running To Stand Still, Stay, Electrical Storm, Sunday Bloody Sunday, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Your Blue Room, Ultraviolet and Where The Streets Have No Name.

Virtually hysterical!

I was gonna just grab the video clip and put it right here in the post for viewing, but really, the commentary at this game site called Kotaku is hysterical. “Bono wears a Wonder Woman-type outfit during Sunday Bloody Sunday.” LOL!

The video clip is highlights from a U2 concert in the virtual reality game called Second Life, and it’s sure to put a smile on your face.

Read/Watch it here.

Live8 Revisited

Some more summer reading…(the text below is from a press release on the Nikon website.)

Nikon is pleased to support a photographic documentary of the 2005 LIVE8 event in London’s Hyde Park captured by Mike McCartney. The book has been produced to celebrate the LIVE8 event, one year on, with the objective of raising further funds for the “Make Poverty History” campaign.

All the images used within the book were taken on a Nikon COOLPIX 4500 camera, rather than a whole host of professional products, to enable Mike to take an informal diary of the day’s events. Only 1,500 special limited edition copies of Live8 will be published, with profits going directly to the Live Aid Trust.

Background

During the summer of 2005 Mike McCartney was present at the main UK venue for the LIVE8 concert in Hyde Park in London. He was a guest of his brother Sir Paul McCartney and the show’s organiser and founder Sir Bob Geldof.

Throughout the course of the event Mike took a series of private and quite personal photographs of the performers, the celebrities and other activities that took place over the day. They have formed a remarkable, if very intimate, photo diary of the event. Most of Mike’s pictures are unique from the point of view that they were taken from within the ‘golden areas’ - those behind the scenes that were not accessible to the majority of press and official public relations photographers, and certainly no member of the public was able to visit them.

In many ways they are an astonishing and unusual ‘unofficial’ record of the day’s activities, particularly considering Mike’s special relationship with so many of the celebrities. He was able through those friendships and close links to photograph them at their ease and in ‘more natural poses’ as they took part in what is regarded as the most astonishing showbiz gathering so far into this 21st Century.

Now many of his wonderful images are to be published in a special ‘one off’ photo-diary book that records and celebrates this particular aspect of LIVE8. A special limited edition of 1,000 copies is to be published by the Wirral based firm of Cities500 International Publishers, who also published Mike’s earlier photographic anthology: Mike McCartney’s Liverpool Life.

The luxurious LIVE 8 book has the endorsement and full support of both the event’s creator Sir Bob Geldof and Sir Paul McCartney, both of whom have written personal forewords.

Extracts from the Forewords

Paul McCartney - “Live8 was one of the greatest days of the year, possibly the decade. Bob Geldof telephoned me, explained the idea of Making Poverty History and aiming the concert at the G8 conference. I was sold. Bob’s a great salesman.

Luckily, my brother Mike was there with his trusty camera to record the day and capture many of the exciting backstage happenings. This book is made from a selection of those pictures and he and I are proud to have been there together and to have been a part of this momentous event.”

Bob Geldolf - “God those bloody McCartneys. You ask one of them to pitch up - the musical genius one, and next minute the photographers, designers, guitarists, activists, mothers, babies, sisters, aunties, uncles and the rest all come and get stuck in. There must be something in that Liverpool mud.

Here’s the brother’s bit. The photographer, poet, hit songwriter one. He who captured perfectly a coming moment and a different age just before it happened with his Box Brownie or whatever. Who felt something long before everyone else. Who could hear the sound of it being born downstairs in the sitting room long before everyone else. And he shot it. Here he’s at it again with his Box Brownie digital. Taking shots of maybe another age being born.”

About the Book

- The book in the first instance is in reality an additional fundraiser for Sir Bob’s charity and linked to the LIVE8 theme “Make Poverty History”.
- Cities500 - under the separate imprint of Woodland Publishing - is producing 1000 limited edition copies of the book.
- The aim is to commemorate and celebrate the LIVE8 event one year on - hence Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Bob Geldof have endorsed Mike McCartney’s concept of the book. He has worked in collaboration with and Cities599 to make available in book form those fabulous yet informal photographs taken behind the scenes during that remarkable day.
- The book helps to re-focus the attention of the world back to that G8 meeting in Edinburgh and the LIVE8 concerts that highlighted the plight of the hungry, disposed and needy of Africa some 20 years after the original LIVE AID concert.
- We believe it is a perfect opportunity to support the ethos behind the LIVE8 concept as well as being an ideal opportunity to further the largely philanthropic work of the musicians and others throughout show business: those who helped draw the world’s attention to the desperate plight of Third World countries.
- The book is to be officially launched by the Liverpool Capital of Culture Company in late June (2006).
- The book costs GBP30 unsigned, GBP60 signed.

People who appear in the book

Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Bob Geldof, Bono and U2, Brad Pitt, Sting, Jeremy Clarkson, The creators of Little Britain - Matt Lucas and David Walliams, Coffey Annan, Chris Martyn, John MacInroe, Peter Kay, Harvey Goldsmith, Slash (ex Guns n Roses), Madonna, Richard Curtis, Killers, Peter Blake, Sir Ian McKellen, Joss Stone, The Scissor Sisters, Bill Gates, Pink Floyd’s drummer Nick Mason and David Gilmour - with his family - and, of course, one of the seminal band’s founder members, the inimitable Roger Waters, along with George Michael and Fran Healy from Travis.

PBS: Frontline - The Age of Aids

Bono on Frontline

I was flipping through channels the other night and our local Boston PBS station was showing the Frontline program “The Age of AIDS.” Instictively, as soon as I saw Jesse Helms speaking about 6 minutes into the program, I knew I needed to hit record on the DVD Recorder. Glad I did.

Not only was Bono interviewed during it, I found the entire program extremely comprehensive in highlighting just what an emergency the AIDS epidemic is. Sure, you can hear Bono talk about it and see him travel to Africa to showcase the DATA work there, but hearing government official after government official, as well as activists working on behalf of the millions dying, it really hit home just how important the support of the ONE Campaign is.

It boggled my mind to know that I was alive when AIDS was first diagnosed and named as an illness. Realizing that we have an entire generation who has always known about AIDS made me feel a little old (what? you don’t know what vinyl records are? you’ve got to be kidding me!). However narrow that generational gap is for me, the realization that there’s a generation who doesn’t remember what it was like prior to this epidemic is astounding.

PBS has done a great job in dedicating part of the Frontline website for this episode. Bono’s interview is featured here. The interview was conducted on December 9, 2005.

You can follow the links on the page for other related features and highlights from the program.
