Bono Goes Shopping with Oprah in Chicago
As part of the apparent Product Red launch, Bono and Oprah went shopping along Michigan Ave. in Chicago late this morning.
An atU2 stringer reports Bono and Oprah visited the GAP store (which was decked out in red), then took a walk down Michigan Ave. (possibly stopping at Armani) to the Apple store.
After leaving the Apple store, Oprah shook some hands with on-lookers, then the two got into a red Ford Thunderbird. Always the gentleman, Bono opened the car door for Oprah.
Camera’s were everywhere following the two-some, so I assume you’ll see footage of the trip on tomorrow’s Oprah show. In fact, as you entered the area on Michigan Avenue, signs were posted saying that by entering the area, you gave consent to be filmed.
Bono, Oprah, Kanye West, and Penelope Cruz appeared shortly thereafter at the Motorola store. The celebrities posed for pictures outside the store. Oprah left first (waving to her fans). Followed by Bono in an SUV, and Kanye. Penelope stayed behind.
Check back later, we may have videotaped footage of part of the event.

I looked into this project and I am shocked at and disappointed in it (and in Bono & Oprah) for getting into bed with the likes of Nike (owners of Converse) and the GAP. Those are 2 of the WORST offenders ever using sweatshop labor! If you are going to address AIDS, at some point you must address poverty, and how can you address poverty with any credibility whatsoever while working with 2 companies whose deplorable factories violate Human Rights daily?!? They could have gotten Converse-style shoes from No Sweat (www.nosweatapparel.com), and cool clothes from any number of Fair Trade clothing dealers. Shame on Bono & Oprah! They of all people ought to know better.

fwiw: not all gap stores are carrying the RED line. Check the gap website to see which stores in your area are selling it.

isis did you look into it far enough to see that gap is making much of the red collection IN africa, creating sustainable jobs and cash flows in the communities?
would the small companies you mention have the marketing budget to advertise this campaign like the gap is doing? could those tiny companies generate even a blip on the radar screen of profit for the global fund compared to what will be generated by companies like the gap and nike?
it’s pretty clear that bono believes that just working with companies and/or people who are already doing everything “right” is sort of defeating the purpose of creating change in the first place.

I saw the program on TV. It was fantastic. thank u for everything. Yet, as a portuguese girl I can’t by some converse products that I find amazing and they aren’t import for Portugal. Then I designed my own Converse All Star, but when I try to by them they don’t let me. and said” I’m sorry we don’t export. Just for EUA.”. I was so m ade, really really made. I try to help fighting against the AIDS through the purchase of some Red Products and the ONE too? But how should I feel if they don´t give access to special RED produts. Why EUA don’t accepted Portuguese Visa Card to have my special Converse, drawn by me (My own Convere)? I felt really bad and excluded.
