U2oons | Bono appears on American Idol

… who’s a worse dancer than me.
(Thx Declan!)
Bono’s weekend visit to Los Angeles wasn’t just about taping a segment for American Idol. He was spotted Monday night at the “Ambassadors for Humanity” dinner hosted by Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation.
JewishJournal.com has more about the event, but the U2/Bono content is mainly in this photo of yer man with Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Spielberg, and Wallis Annenberg.
That’s what StarPulse.com is saying on its blog.
New Order, Bono and Depeche Mode are tipped to give next month’s Cannes Film Festival in France a musical boost by performing at a party following the premiere of Ian Curtis biopic Control.
We know yer man will be there, what with U2 3D having a premiere at the prestigious film festival. And if there’s a party with a microphone, I’d say it’s a safe bet he’s gonna be singing, too.
Interesting few days for the U2 boys, no? Didn’t anyone tell them it is the “off season?”
As if the vision of the band selling off all of their musical instruments for charity and dedicating themselves to a lifetime of writing broadway musicals wasn’t hard enough to handle, there is that other thing to grapple with: American Idol + Bono.
Now, it has been suggested by some of our friends that perhaps this whole American Idol appearance means that Bono is not exactly “The Cool.”
To this, we say: “Whaaat?!”
The Bono, not cool? Noooo waaaay. In other news, the Easter Bunny might not be real.
Seriously, let’s get this straight. Appearing on a show that has 30 million-plus viewers. Using the appearance to influence said viewers to focus their attention on those less fortunate than them. THIS makes Bono uncool? Really?
Funny, because I always thought it was things like
this that sent him spinning into “uncool” territory. (I think dude stole that jacket from the set of the Golden Girls.)
Let’s face it: being cool is not on the Bono’s agenda. In fact, I actually saw his daily planner yesterday and this is what it said:
1) Work on finding words that rhyme with spider
2) Make sure facial hair color matches hair on top of head
3) Save world
See? “Be Cool” did not even make the list.
Edge, on the other hand, now this cat we know is cool! I hope this whole Mr. The Edge in the spotlight thing isn’t just a fad or a phase. It would be so nice to have a cool guy as the official band spokesperson for once. (Even though we are pretty sure Edge is totally fibbing about that whole “we’re working on our new record” thing.)

Superherohype.com reports that director Julie Taymor is now seeking actors for the upcoming Spider-man musical, set to begin rehearsing in New York this July.
What does this have to do with U2? Well, the credits list “Bono and The Edge of U2″ as the folks responsible for Music and Lyrics.
I’m beyond excited about this possibility because:
A) Spider Man is my favorite superhero.
B) It would be cool if members of U2 could add a ‘Tony’ to their list of awards.
C) I would love to hear how their music is received by a theater crowd.
D) Perhaps this will mean another Larry Mullen Jr./Adam Clayton collaboration.
The council of the town of Trim, Ireland has a tough decision ahead of them tonight. They’re deciding whether or not to name a new street after Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley.
The proposal has caused quite a debate amongst residents, who were asked to submit name suggestions for this street, which is the first to be built within the ramparts since the 1300s.
A historian came up with “Paisley Parade” while other townspeople suggested musical nods such as “Graceland Place” and—yes—”Bono Street.”
One can only imagine what the real estate value would suddenly look like if Bono Street came to fruition.
According to this article , Bob Geldof is attempting to organize a re-record of the legendary Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band album with notable bands covering all of the songs. And yes, U2 is on the list.
Does anyone else cringe at the mere thought?
I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of covers in general, but doing something like this ‘in honor’ of the LP’s 40th anniversary seems like somewhat of a musical roast, even with great musicians such as our boys on board.
Remember when Geldof tried to update “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” a few years back without Sting, Simon LeBon, Boy George, etc.? It was a disaster. Even Bono’s part, which was sung again by Bono, didn’t capture the magic of the original recording and left a bad aftertaste in our mouths.
I say if Geldof wants to give props to The Fab Four on this monumental anniversary, he should let Sir George Martin have a stab at re-mixing the original (as the “Love” album he recently did for the Vegas show came out beautifully) or have Paul McCartney do a special live performance with Ringo on drums and play the album start to finish.
Or maybe he should let it be.
According to this story in the Daily Mirror, Bono is being considered for a part in the film adaptation of the musical Blood Brothers. Director Alan Parker “acknowledged that Bono’s name had been mentioned as a possible performer to play the show’s narrator.” Add this to appearances in Million Dollar Hotel and Across the Universe, perhaps Bono’s working on building quite a film resume. Smart career planning, in case that music thing doesn’t work out.
