Casting Call: Spider-man The Musical

Superherohype.com reports that director Julie Taymor is now seeking actors for the upcoming Spider-man musical, set to begin rehearsing in New York this July.

What does this have to do with U2? Well, the credits list “Bono and The Edge of U2″ as the folks responsible for Music and Lyrics.

I’m beyond excited about this possibility because:

A) Spider Man is my favorite superhero.
B) It would be cool if members of U2 could add a ‘Tony’ to their list of awards.
C) I would love to hear how their music is received by a theater crowd.
D) Perhaps this will mean another Larry Mullen Jr./Adam Clayton collaboration.

Where The Street May Have a Name: Bono

The council of the town of Trim, Ireland has a tough decision ahead of them tonight. They’re deciding whether or not to name a new street after Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley.

The proposal has caused quite a debate amongst residents, who were asked to submit name suggestions for this street, which is the first to be built within the ramparts since the 1300s.

A historian came up with “Paisley Parade” while other townspeople suggested musical nods such as “Graceland Place” and—yes—”Bono Street.”

One can only imagine what the real estate value would suddenly look like if Bono Street came to fruition.

Is nothing sacred?

According to this article , Bob Geldof is attempting to organize a re-record of the legendary Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band album with notable bands covering all of the songs. And yes, U2 is on the list.

Does anyone else cringe at the mere thought?

I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of covers in general, but doing something like this ‘in honor’ of the LP’s 40th anniversary seems like somewhat of a musical roast, even with great musicians such as our boys on board.

Remember when Geldof tried to update “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” a few years back without Sting, Simon LeBon, Boy George, etc.? It was a disaster. Even Bono’s part, which was sung again by Bono, didn’t capture the magic of the original recording and left a bad aftertaste in our mouths.

I say if Geldof wants to give props to The Fab Four on this monumental anniversary, he should let Sir George Martin have a stab at re-mixing the original (as the “Love” album he recently did for the Vegas show came out beautifully) or have Paul McCartney do a special live performance with Ringo on drums and play the album start to finish.

Or maybe he should let it be.

The last of the rock stars?

An article by Mark Ellen in the Mirror claims that the world has only produced two “rock legends” in the past three decades: Bono and Morrisey.

While I’m a fan of both, I’d also have to credit the bands those two gentleman have led in creating their legacy. Either man wouldn’t be a household name were it not for their musical partners.

But this writer raises a valid point. Who, of the popular entertainers today, can we say will honestly be around in 20 years, still making quality music?

I can’t think of any.
