This cartoon was one of the batch I drew for @u2 back in 2005, for the ‘you draw Achtoon Baby contest.‘ I really like this one, and I hope for those that have seen it before that they don’t mind seeing it again, too (truth is I was invited to be part of an exhibit of Alaskan cartoonists at the Fairbanks art museum — a real privilege — so I had to turn my cartoon powers toward that direction this week).

For those that don’t know (my Mom, for instance — “Hi Mom!”), one of the band members (Bono?) said a nifty quote describing how U2 works, saying, ‘Edge is the head, Bono the heart, and Adam and Larry the legs.’ I thought it’d be fun to turn that into a Godzilla / Power Rangers theme, with our hero’s assembling into the unstoppable, irrefutable, inexorable, paddy-powered U2.

Edge looks like he has an eagle under his nose…but I love the concept, now that you’ve explained it.

This has always been one of my faves. I remember seeing it back in ‘05 for the first time and laughing harder than a webcomic should make me laugh. I laughed nearly as hard this time. ;p Keep up the great work, Ian!

This isn’t really well-drawn, and it’s not particularly funny.

I don’t see why anyone can’t be honest about this. Everyone seems to be doing more ass-kissing than picture inspecting.

You’ve done better, this.. isn’t really it.

thanks for the honesty, will. we can’t please all the folks, can we?

funny: personally this is my favorite u2oon to date. it incompasses everything i hope a u2oon has — relates an extremly obscure u2 factoid, and expands on the context, resulting into something which only the crusty elite of u2 fandom can even hope to relate.

you see, u2oons are weird. it is a kind of cartoon that tries as hard as possible to relate to as few people as possible. if you don’t get it, then you’re probably not an uber u2 fan. which is ok, too.

or maybe u2oon just arn’t funny. who knows?
