Thanks Tom for Tomorrow

One of U2’s very first television appearances in the United States was on the NBC late night program “The Tomorrow Show” hosted by Tom Snyder. Word came out today that Tom passed away at the age of 71 from complications due to leukemia.

He had a great sense of humor and got what U2 was about at the very beginning. Check out their visit with Tom a few decades ago:

Scattered Thoughts: Bad Influences

With the Simpsons Movie in the news, Blender.com recently released a list of the Best Simpsons Band Cameos ever. Um, okay. I guess there is a list for everything now, huh? Even more ridiculous than the fact that there is a list of such things is the fact that U2 is not on the list. Doh.

Do these people know nothing of the the Spoon saga? Adam’s wanker comment? Bono’s bum on the bar stool?! Seriously. They was robbed.

Anyway, here’s an amusing clip from a Simpsons DVD in which the band and two Simpsons cast members (Lisa and Homer) discuss the episode that U2 appeared in. Apparently rock stars arrive late to work. And bring booze. Who knew? The clip also includes some life-sized Pop-era rock stars.

U2 on the Simpsons.

In not-actually-related news, I have to say that I have always felt Bono’s “appearance” on Family Guy was his funniest cartoon moment:

Bono on Desert Island - Family Guy.

That’s all.

Is the Mullet really the Magic?

In this blog titled Reunited And It Feels So Good on Denver’s Your Hub.com, Paul Hughes makes the case for Bono’s mullet being responsible for U2’s brilliant songs (i.e. the early stuff).

Since War and The Joshua Tree are my favorite U2 albums, I’m in no position to argue.

But what do you all think?

Scattered Thoughts: Spidey-tastic

Fake Bono sent us this video with some of the new Spidey music. (That’s what he called it. Really.) It’s got a real throwback sound. Fake Edge is on fire and yer man is hitting high notes like a litte girl. “Gisele” looks fab in the Spidey suit.

Heh. Slow news week.

What’s New, Pussycat?

This little tidbit comes from the Variety blog “The Set List”: Tom Jones is in the process of recording his first album for S-Curve records, and already has three songs in the bag, including one reportedly written by Bono and supported by Edge on guitar. One of the other new songs already completed is a cover of the Arctic Monkeys’ “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor.” Can’t wait to see the supporting tour for this one…

Perhaps I’m behind the times a bit, but I’ve only just realized there’s some really cool photos available through www.imdb.com. For example, there’s a nice slideshow from the 2007 Food Bank of New York Can-Do Awards Dinner on April 23.

There’s also some photos from the Music Rising “Icons of Music” auction from April 21. Adam looks particulary suave in his shades of gray attire. Notice that Edge looks just as thrilled to be stood next to Christy Turlington at the auction as he was to be with Jimmy Fallon and Steve Schirripa. Come to think of it, based on the variety of photos available here, it looks like Edge only has one style of smile!

Small U2 mention in August ‘07 Vanity Fair

Just flipping through the latest edition of Vanity Fair, and caught a brief U2 mention in the Fairground section of the magazine. There’s a full-page photo of Bono kissing the hand of Italian acress Claudia Cardinale, as well as a small black and white photo on the opposite page of the entire band along with Daniel Lanois. They were attending the Vanity Fair celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2007.

Others in attendance at the shindig: Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul Allen, Roberto Cavalli, Barry Diller, Marie-Chantal and Prince Pavlos of Greece, Diane von Furstenberg, and Minnie Driver (as well as many others).

Scattered Thoughts: Is This Cool? (Or not?)

Bono and Edge were in New York this past week. Broadway shows, languorous lunches, rock star sightings and possible pink apartment shopping all over town. Cool stuff.

But not as cool as Jacknife Lee’s website, which I stumbled upon for the first time today. It’s one of those sites that is (almost) slightly beyond one’s ability to navigate. You know, the type where you have no idea what to click because there are no clear links or headings, just uber-edgy graphics and links that take you heaven knows where.

Basically, it makes no sense. But that does not mean it’s not cool, because it is. Cool.

If you visit Jacknife Lee’s site, you can listen to his remix of U2’s Window in the Sky. I had never heard this particular remix before. Have you guys heard it?

It’s not even listed as Window in the Skies. It’s listed as Window in the Sky. To find and listen to this remix, go to jacknifelee.com and when the black screen pops up on the home page, click on the red dot. Then, at the next page, click on the fifth dot from the left at the bottom of the page. Wait for the page to load and a list of remixes pops up.

The list includes a few other U2 remixes that have been officially released (Fast Cars, Ave Maria, Vertigo), as well as remixes for other artists. Window in the Sky is at the bottom of the list, and you can listen to an audio stream of it there.

Bono’s voice is very distorted, but I think this remix is really cool.

Do you?
