Siskel & Ebert review Rattle and Hum
I had never seen this before. I imagine their issues/criticisms would be similar to what any other non-fan might think of the movie. (Thx to Spoutnik for sharing this link in our forum.)

amateur night
inarticulate
badly lit
incomprehensible singing
“‘one of the guys’ does make a political statement…..”
hysterically bad review of what we now know and love as the best/worst ‘little’ road movie ever made.
thanks for sharing…i think!

He spoke badly of one of my favourite songs (Running To Standstill), and I think he dowsn’t understand the movie because he is not a fan.

Roger Ebert is absolutely right. Viewed as a film only, it is a mess. And it has not improved with age. It’s hard to believe U2, being the marketing machine it is now, ever would have let it see the light of day. But lessons were obviously learned from it.

funny. i actually remember this when it did first air — back when i was just an ‘intro’ u2 fan, and i remember how this review spurned me to go see the movie because i figured if the ‘estabolishment’ thought it was crap, it HAD to be good.
and i think rattle and hum stands as an awesome performance archive of the joshua tree period. (but i’m a big fan, and can appreciate such things.)
thanks for posting the great memory.

I personally enjoyed the not-so-perfect looking aspects of the film. U2 - inarticulate, incomprehensible, amateurs? Felt like Siskel (the 1st guy) was excessively reaching for criticism here. A way-off, seriously bad reveiw…Guess they’re just human as well.

I liked the movie, but I agree that they were a bit inarticulate in the first part…But other that that, it was great! I didn’t get why it was PG-13 though. It only had, like, two swears!
