Bono on the Late Late Show May 30

This article indicates that Bono will be among the featured A-listers to appear on the finale of the Late Late Show, which will also feature dancers competing for Ireland’s spot in the Eurovision Dance Contest. Let’s hope they don’t ask the celebs to dance along…

ONE Pint To End Global Poverty

I got a Ben & Jerry’s Chunkmail announcement this morning about how they’ve partnered with the ONE Campaign to end Global Poverty by selling their ONE Cheesecake Brownie flavored ice cream with the ONE logo on the packaging and encouraging people to sign up for the campaign.

Is it just me, or does it seem odd to help aleviate global hunger and poverty by eating gourmet, pricey ice cream?

What’s next? (RED)uced Fat Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ben & Jerry’s?

Don’t get me wrong - I fully support what the ONE Campaign stands for and is doing - and the way they are partnering with people to get their cause out there. But helping to end hunger by eating? Ironic.

Scattered Thoughts: Worth A Listen

Forgive the artsy little non-video backgrounds, but these YouTube clips are really worth a listen. The uploader lists the clips as: U2 interviewed by Dave Fanning, RTE Radio 2, January 1980. Timing-wise, this would be after U23 had been released, but before the band had recorded Boy. In these clips, teenage Bono and Edge discuss recent demos they had just recorded, and Fanning plays those “demo” songs in between chatting with Edge and Bono

Part 1: Edge explains why legendary British DJ John Peel wouldn’t play their record. Bono tells a hysterical story about his inability to use England’s “funny” phone boxes. I love that it is the phone’s fault. They talk about a song they just recorded, and then play the recording - “The Dream Is Over.”

Part 2: They talk about their recent gigs in London and their good reviews from the British press. Edge listens. “Professor” Bono goes off on a blah blah Baby Bono tangent

Part 3: Bono keeps referring to Edge as Dave, which is so confusing (to me). Oh, and Jimmy Page latched onto Edge?

Update: As Beth points out in the comments, there are a few other U2-related interviews uploaded by the same YouTube user that are worth checking out.

Ride the U2 Subway in Vienna

No, it’s not really named for the band (and as far as I know doesn’t play U2 songs exclusively along the trip), but there is a new subway line extension in Vienna that has been created to move the city more rapidly to the Ernst Happel football stadium.

If you’re a football fan who is interested in the upcoming championships, you’ll want to read more here.

If you’re like me (hoping to visit Vienna), you’ll want to ride that line someday just to get the ticket that surely reads “U2.”

“Salami, Cheese and Pickles…

…help keep starving people strong.”

Thanks to so many comedians and satirists, I can’t get the warped lyrics or visuals out of my head.

Tonight, MHD broadcasted Rattle and Hum (it’s on again tomorrow from 3:00 - 5:00 EDT, btw). I’m finally able to “enjoy” Rattle and Hum broadcasted in HD. Unfortunately, when I watched “Bullet the Blue Sky” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” all I could picture was Ben Stiller instead of Bono thanks to his skit on his program The Ben Stiller Show. (The one where U2’s playing the Bar Mitzvah). (Side note - God do I miss the faster tempo version of Pride!)

When I hear “One,” all I can sing along to is Chris Kattan’s Saturday Night Live lyrics “Salami, Cheese and Pickles help keep starving people strong” from when they did their comedic take on NetAid. Of course, there’s also the Ben Stiller version of “One” for Lucky Clovers cereal too.

And when “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” gets played, all I can chant is “Someone Tell Sam Jackson He’s My Bro” from YouTube fame.

One side note, MHD totally edited the ending credits of Rattle and Hum - sped through them with only a portion of “All I Want Is You!” At least they made up for it by broadcasting the “All Because of You,” “Original of the Species,” “City of Blinding Lights,” and “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” videos. Interestingly, only the COBL and SYCMIOYO videoes were filmed in HD. (And yes, when that was broadcast, I couldn’t stop singing about snakes on a plane.)

Final Days for Bono’s Birthday Gift

The folks at the African Well Fund are in their final days of their “Build a Well for Bono’s Birthday” campaign. This year’s theme is “Walk to the Water: Walk With Me.” Below is their latest press release:

The African Well Fund is accepting donations for its sixth annual Bono’s Birthday Well fundraiser, “Walk to the Water … Walk with Me,” through Saturday, May 10, Bono’s 48th birthday. Donations can be made at http://www.africanwellfund.org/Bono-Well-2008.html.

Donors to the Bono’s Birthday Well are invited to sign their names to an online birthday card that will be forwarded to Bono. Last year Bono sent a thank-you note to African Well Fund that can be viewed at the well homepage, http://www.africanwellfund.org/Bono-Well-2008.html. The well page also includes flyers, banners and avatars that can be uploaded or forwarded to spread the word on the fundraiser.

The first Bono’s Birthday Well fundraiser was held in 2003 with the intent of collecting $1,000 to build one well in Bono’s honor. That year, the African Well Fund collected more than $10,000. The second year, $15,000 was raised. More than $26,000 was collected for Bono’s Birthday Well in 2005. Over $32,000 was collected in 2006.

Last year saw the largest Bono’s Birthday Well total to date, with more than $34,000 collected. Those funds were used toward projects at several schools in Uganda implemented in partnership with Invisible Children and Africare. These projects are currently underway.

Tax-deductible donations to the African Well Fund are used by our partner organization Africare to fund various water projects in Africa. To date, African Well Fund donations have given more than 100,000 people in 10 African nations improved access to water.

Worst Lyric List

In my opinion, these are some of the worst one-line lyrics in U2’s discography (in no order)

1) I’ll do the maximum time for you tonight (Love You Like Mad)
2) The air is heavy, heavy like a truck (Electrical Storm)
3) Grace, it’s the name for a girl (Grace)

What other one-line lyrics would you add to this list?

If Only…

…you were able to book talent for your local college campus now using the prices of yesteryear! We sort of know that U2 rakes in a guaranteed amount of rediculous moohlah with any concert performance. Thinking back to the War tour, how cheap do you think it would have been for colleges to book U2 for their spring weekend concert? Exactly!

I was reminded of this as I was going through my basement (yes - I’m still going through my basement) and I stumbled upon a notebook from a college entertainment booking conference I attended in 1992. The showcase comedians for the conference were George Lopez, Dave Chappelle, and Jon Stewart. If you wanted to book, say, Jon Stewart - back then, it would have been a cool $1250. Dave Chappelle - $1000, and George Lopez was $1500 plus travel. Forget about getting them at that bargain basement price now!

To all of the college student event planners out there - remember you have the finger on the pulse of who’s who with up-and-coming acts. Enjoy the raw talent and pricing now because you won’t be able to afford them a few years from now.
