U2 Songs for Weddings
I have a very good friend who’ll be joining his sweetheart in marriage in August. He’s asked me to come up with a list of good U2 songs to be played at the wedding.
For my wedding a few years back, we had the “Strung Out on U2″ disc playing prior to the ceremony. People who didn’t know U2’s music thought it was nice classical music while the fans in attendance got the inside joke.
I’ve been to a wedding where the happily married couple did their first dance to “One” - they didn’t realize the song was about breaking up. Oops. They were so excited to tell me their song choice because they knew I was a U2 fan…I didn’t have the heart to tell them the song’s real meaning.
Looking at the U2 Discography, I’d think Mysterious Ways would be good for the dance at the reception, as well as Slow Dancing. Anyone have any good suggestions?

“If You Wear that Velvet Dress” would be a nice slow dance. It’s so sensual and sexy.

My husband & I were married in November 2007 & during the planning process enjoyed making music choices.
During the prelude we included “4th of July.”
I walked down the aisle to “Scarlet.”
We included “Beautiful Day” in our postlude. We planned to leave the ceremony to this but at the last minute changed it to Cat Stevens’ “If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out” and our guests exited to “Beautiful Day.”
Our bridal party was supposed to enter the reception to “Discotheque” (but there was a glitch with the DJ so that was a little disappointing).
Our first dance was “All I Want is You.”
We cut the cake to “Sweetest Thing.”
“Discotheque” and “Beautiful Day” were also played during the dancing.
We included in the list of dance suggestions to the DJ:
“Even Better Than The Real Thing”
“One” (mostly because it’s more widely known & liked)
“The Fly”
“Mysterious Ways”
“Elevation”
“All Because of You”
“Trip Through Your Wires”
“Lady With The Spinning Head”
and
“Until The End Of The World” (which was a “must play”)
“Strung out on U2″ is a great idea. Wish I’d have thought of that.
I hope your friend and his partner enjoy their day.

Wow, that is a real U2 wedding — we had a singer and guitarist do “In a little while” for the prelude; I walked down the aisle to a Bono-inspired “Can’t Help Falling In Love”; there is not a good first dance song: “All I want is you” — “you say you want diamond and a ring of pearls … and all I want is you”
We danced to “Home” by Depeche Mode — a great suprise to DH because everyone assumed it would be a U2 song!

Also: we had our friend/minister refer to the lyrics of One in the ceremony … marriage is hard, but we get to carry each other!

In A Little While is the most romantic U2 song (even if it is written about a hangover.) I’d play Desire and All I Want is You at the reception. But I would not have One or Mysterious Ways in a wedding playlist — neither one seem suitable. And certainly not Love is Blindness — that’s a breakup song!

My nephew just got married last month, and the first dance was All I Want Is You. They kept it a secret so when it came on I got very excited. On the video you can hear me carrying on. Embarrassing!

My son got married last year and they played “Beautiful Day” after the ceremony as they entered the reception. At some point during the festivities they also played “All I Want Is You”

My husband and I got married October 2006. My sister in law played “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles on guitar when I was walking down the aisle. My husband is a Beatles fan. After the ceremony was complete we walked out to “Beautiful Day”. Our first dance was to “In A Little While”.

My wedding ‘Beautiful Day’ as we entered reception and ‘All I Want is You’ was our first dance song. Cannot go past these, and they worked magnificantly. The DJ was particularly savvy in that he timed it so that as we were announced and entered the room, the first chours of BD blasted out the speakers with lots of cheers and whistles form the guests - perfect.

My wife and I were married in 2002 and we played “Love Rescue Me” , “All I Want is You” and “40″ during the ceremony, and walked out to “Beautiful Day”… A Catholic length wedding in a UCC church between an atheist and and a Lutheran! Lyrically, they may not be perfect choices, but they fit the mood perfectly.
