Glen Campbell covers U2

We reported some time ago that 72-year-old country legend Glen Campbell is covering “All I Want Is You” on his new album, Meet Glen Campbell. Now you can see a live performance of it.

Campbell and his band did the song recently as a part of an “AOL Sessions” taping. Here’s the video:

I have a very funny story about the seemingly deaf custodian at my school and Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman” but that’s for another day. Anyway, Campbell does a nice job here but what struck me initially was his Bono-like Vertigo era hairstyle. Put on a black leather jacket and some platform shoes and we have Bono 2032. Of course, only after Bono loses weight for the 2033 World Amphitheater Tour.

I agree with Dave about being teleported to 2032 and potentially watching Bono singing it (without the country voice of course)…only trouble is I think he’ll have more wrinkles, but similar hair.

The video is no longer available. Why?

You have to admit, the guy can still sing. The arrangement sure sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Does anyone else see Billy Graham?

I think this is right pretty. It’s always been one of my favorite U2 songs, and wouldn’t it be great if he and Bono could duet on this? They could crossover on GAC.

    gives me chills.

could it be cause my parents admired campbell so when i was a child? is it the unmistakable voice that he has not misplaced? is the fascination with how his aging must certainly be a reflection of mine?

it’s none of those reasons – it’s THE SONG. All I Want Is You, one of the greatest U2 has come up with.

Amen, Brett…. I used to sing my youngest son to sleep with this song – one of the few U2 tunes that are actually within my limited vocal range. Watching it just now, he overheard the video and asked me if that’s the song I used to sing to him, because he recognized it (he’s six).

    Another feelgood parenting moment. :)

I was so ready to make some sharp comment about aging artists trying to find new audiences (a la Pat Boone and his heavy metal gig), but found that I really actually liked this. The version was pretty faithful to the original and Glen really can move for a 72 year old….except his forehead, which seems to have the same problem as Barry Manilow, Kenny Rodgers and Nicole Kidman…go figure.

I was impressed. Now we’ll just have to check out the Green Day covers.

love the stories here & love the song itself but I’m not so crazy about Glen Campbell. :P I guess its an ‘ok’ version but I won’t be running out to get it. It lacks the original’s passion and fire ( I’m biased for U2 obviously!). And yep… a botox’d Glen is a bit scary! I can’t get his deranged DUI pic out of my mind, either!
