Scattered Thoughts: 2009 (Optimism!)

U2’s new album is almost ready and it’s going to be full of slice of the moon Edge awesomeness straight from the richest songwriting vein that EVER existed. That’s what this U2.com article full of Bono quotes says. (Plus, 50 or 60 new songs have been written.) And when Bono says you’ll hear songs in early 2009, he is talking January 1, right off the bat, people.

That’s my translation and I’m sticking to it. (I’m trying out optimism for a change). Seriously, I do realize that an alternate translation of the above yields a sort of “omgzzz, delayed? u2 is the suk” type effect. But since it’s already been 46 months since the last album’s release, I’m thinking that having to wait an extra 2 or 3 or 12? months for the next album is not really so tragic. (Optimism!)

Either way, I am amused by the memory of this:

“Bands now take years making records. We took I think three or four months to make the Joshua Tree. That’s too long to make a record. I don’t want to spend that amount of time on making a record next time.” - Bono**

Thankfully we have that quote on video (2-3 minutes in):

** a long, long time ago

Somehow I just don’t believe that U2 is going to spend the extra months working full time on the album. But, It’s their album, they can release it anytime they want to.

Good video! Now if I only figure out how to crop Ron Wood out of the frame..

Ron Wood is cool, dude, listen to the Small Faces sometime.

I couldn’t agree with the old (young) Bono more… speed it up in the studio, don’t overproduce.

Cool clip, great stuff from Bono about his Dad.

The album is ready, the remasters didn’t sell well, Under A Blood Red Sky being released, the original thank God, so at Christmas these will be big sellers for us fans that won’t something U2. Bono has put on weight and he needs time to get into shape, still looks good to me tho, but touring is a grueling part of U2. As usual I expect a single to be realeased before Oct. 31st, to be up for a grammy, new album in March, tour follows. They have did this so many times. I can wait for my favorite band, can you?

I thought the grammy cut off was September 31st?

Maybe it’s time to stop jockeying for Grammies, and worrying about what will sell for Christmas.

Look at Under a Blood Red Sky, Bono’s no heavier than he was back then (normal)….the Edge is the skinny one.

Grammy cutoff is September 30th. From the grammy website:
“What are the eligibility requirements?…. For the 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards, albums must be released between Oct. 1, 2006 and Sept. 30, 2007. Recordings must be in general distribution in the United States, i.e. sales by label to a branch or recognized independent distributor, via the Internet, or mail order/retail sales for a nationally marketed product”

Forget the Grammys, acknowledgement from your peers is fine, but it is not the final say on whether the music is any good
achtung baby didn’t win that many grammys in compairson to other u2albums and that’s considered by many to be their best
They know they need to get this album right, they’re one of the most self-critical and self-aware bands out there (that’s an element that’s made them such an amazing band for such a long time)
i’m sure they’re aware they didn’t surpass people’s expectations with their last few efforts, and that’s why they want to get this one. in some ways the delay has actually raised my expectations
