American Idol Final – U2 Connection

My local FOX affiliate reported last night that finalist David Cook will perform “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” during tonight’s competition. This marks the second time a song Bono wrote has been used on the show. Last year, “American Prayer” was performed during the Idol Gives Back episode.

If you’re wondering how U2 allowed the contestants to use their music, here’s the connection: this season, Idol worked with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to let the contestants use music from inducted artists. U2 was inducted in 2005, so there you go!

UPDATE
According to Idolator.com, U2 gave special permission for “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” to be used for that one performance only.

interesting. melody wise, it’s not that big of a stretch for David C– no soaring octaves. if he does a low-key ‘emo’ version i’ll be disappointed. This song’s got punch!

No, please!! I totally hate David Cook, at least I can stand Archuleta singing, but Cook feels the need to make every song a “hard rock” song. Like with Eleanor Rigby. He totally ruined it, so if he turns ISHFWILF, a gospel song, into a “rock” song I’d feel so revolted…

Not being American, I took a look over at YouTube to see if this was any good. The clip’s up, and surprisingly, he’s not bad. The standard jokes about “We’ve found what we’re looking for” were made, and David looks like he’s taken some lessons from Bono when it comes to audience interaction.

Usually I shy away from U2 covers, especially on Idol shows, but this wasn’t half bad.

I thought he did a good job. I’ve been a David Cook fan since “Hello” (get it? He had me at Hello…ha ha) and before the show thought, “OK now, don’t make me hate you”. But I actually liked it and thought he did a good job.

He did a totally awesome job, I thought. David Cook is the new Bono.

    Did I say that?

I want to see Cook and Bono and The Edge together.
