Blair: Bono “could have been a president or prime minister”

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has some strong praise for Bono in Blair’s just-released memoir, A Journey. He says Bono “could have been a president or prime minister standing on his head.” Here’s a snapshot of the full paragraph sent in by @U2 reader Neil W.

Tony Blair on Bono

Your turn: Whenever U2 calls it quits, will Bono make a good politician if he pursues that path?

Look. Not that he’d be a bad politician or anything -I’m sure he’d do fine- but why on earth would he WANT to be?! Things are sooo screwed up in politics right now and Bono doesn’t deserve to have to deal with all that sh**t! He’s a good person and doesn’t need to be corrupted by the evil of our greedy government men currently controlling the world.

i think he already is a ‘prime’ – of sorts -
    time to redefine.
In a job interview for a real leader – i would give him -
    common sense —– tick
    courageous spirit —– tick
    a server —– tick
    a second interview —- tick

I can’t imagine Bono, who has never been professionally accountable to anyone other than his 3 band mates, would find being a public servant much to his liking. When it comes to furthering his own agenda, there’s probably no one better. In his current role, which I am not going to attempt to define, he moves about unrestricted, party lines are not an issue, he doesn’t have to explain himself to anyone.

Why would he give any of that up? It’s not like there’s a ‘Leader of Planet Earth’ position he can waltz into. And if there were, I rather think it would be a dictatorship. He does have the shades for that position, should it manifest one day.

I don’t think Bono is as self serving as you suggest, “Wind”. Granted he is a rocker who needs to sell records and image but I have followed his offstage charity work for 25 years and it has been impressive. Since his month in Ethiopia in 1984 Bono has not wavered in his commitment to raising awareness and donating $ millions for relief of extreme poverty and disease in Africa. Early interviews with the band (see Tom Snider show on youtube) reveal a humility rare among celebrities young or old. The shades Bono wears, by the way, are due to an allergy to various things including, believe it or not flashing lights.

Bono once famously said that he’d never run for President (of Ireland) as he “wouldn’t want to move to a smaller house”. This was of course said with tongue in cheek but I’d imagine he’d have the same attitude to becoming a politician :)
