Fans might recall Adam Bevell’s excitement as he got pulled up by Bono to join U2 on stage in Nashville on July 2. He played “All I Want Is You” for his wife, Andrea, and the full band played along.

Many in the stadium did not realize that Bevell was blind. At the end of the song, Bono gave Bevell his Gretsch Goal Is Soul guitar.

Bevell has turned this experience into the song, “Hand In The Darkness,” as a thank you to Bono. He said to Arizona’s FOX television, “I was able to send him a thank you letter to pass it on to Bono. I didn’t think the thank you letter was enough so I ended up writing a song.”

He described the song title’s inspiration:”I thought how often has it happened to me that someone has reached out to me through the darkness and led me to safety. … I thought that idea, a lot of people can relate to that idea, because you don’t have to be blind to have lost your way… and that whole idea of hand in the darkness came along and I felt inspired to write this song.”

“Hand In The Darkness” is available for download on iTunes for 99 cents and all the proceeds will be donated to ONE.

I may have mentioned this before, but if I haven’t—whenever the U2 tour makes its way back to my continent, I start a self-imposed diet from listening to them until the last few weeks before the shows. Why on earth do I do this? Because just hearing one note of any of their songs sends me into such an excited frenzy, I un-check all of the other artists in my iPod and play nothing but U2 for the duration of the wait. And that’s just silly.

This year, I’ve been especially restrained because there are so many new good albums coming out. Yes, I said it, there are so many new good albums! I’m currently enjoying fresh sounds from PJ Harvey, R.E.M. and Duran Duran. I hear the new Radiohead is also awesome. So my point is: there are other quality bands to tune into while I wait for the Best Band on Earth™ to return.

Anyway, today I innocently went to see Scream 4 and a few scenes into the movie, the main character, Sydney, opens the door of her younger cousin’s bedroom and there staring back at us is the poster of The Joshua Tree. It would’ve been easy to ignore, but the director kept framing the conversation so that Larry Mullen, Jr. was in full focus, and I kept wondering why a teenager of today would have that poster on their wall like us kids of the 80s did so many years ago.

But I let it go and returned home after the movie to do some spring cleaning. As I was scrubbing out my refrigerator, I had Oprah’s guilty pleasure reality show Season 25 playing in the background. I heard her speaking to her producer about a new house she was building and that she was creating a special corridor to show off her most prized possessions. What was the possession she used as an example? Her guitar from The Edge.

I promptly turned off the show and turned on The Unforgettable Fire. I surrender.

U2′s first American fan, WZLX DJ Carter Alan, is asking U2 to fill the heart-shaped hole in their tour schedule and come back to Boston. On the WZLX website he writes, “I’ve contacted the band to remind them that there’s a conspicuous hole in their tour schedule next summer. After the ’360′ world tour plays Philadelphia on July 14, there is nothing on the schedule until July 23 in New Jersey.”

He is even taking it one step further and asking fans to personally contact U2 themselves to request a Boston concert. “I urge everyone to contact U2′s organization, website or even their relatives in Ireland (because I’m sure there’s a couple) to ask them to play Gillette Stadium next summer. We’ll do what we can here!” Alan writes.

As a fellow Boston-area U2 fan, I would agree that not having U2 come back up to our neck of the woods is, well, insane. But, after paying $40 to park at the stadium, and have people in 3+ hours of non-moving traffic to just get out of the stadium, as well as having sound bouncing around the stadium, I can understand why the production has currently bypassed this neck of the woods. However, if you know you can sell out Gillette Stadium, then it’s just money in the bank for Live Nation and U2.

A lot of people think Bono wrote the words that he recites in that World Cup TV commercial that features “Magnificent” in the background as Bono talks.

But the script was written by a copywriter named Nicholas Sonderup:

Sitting in a Manhattan office and clad in a U.S.A. soccer jersey, Sonderup is justifiably thrilled that so many people who have seen the minute-long ad, in which Bono reads his script while the opening chords of U2′s “Magnificent” linger in the recesses, assume that the globally-conscious Irish rock god himself wrote it.

“I remember saying in the edit room, ‘People are going to think Bono wrote those words,’” says Sonderup, who played Division I soccer at Winthrop University.

That’s from a recent article on Fanhouse, and it’s a good read.
