Deja Vu..rtigo
The Seattle and Portland areas don’t see a lot of snow every year—in fact, as a child who grew up in Portland, I remember several years where we didn’t see any. This year has proven to be different.
For over a week now, the Pacific Northwest has seen snow, ice, “thundersnow” (I didn’t even know that existed), high winds, etc., which have paralyzed both major cities (and pretty much everywhere in between). And as we’ve been trading stories among the @U2 staff, commiserating about delayed (or canceled) holiday travels, almost everyone has brought up the fact that the last time we were all together as a “family,” it was doing the same thing.
The night before the final Vertigo U2 show of 2005, we hosted our @U2 10th Birthday Bash at Kell’s in Portland. That day, out of nowhere, the snow began falling—and it kept falling well into the evening, worrying all of us that our guests wouldn’t be able to make it. But thankfully, the white stuff didn’t keep anyone away.
It was a wonderful night with lively performances by Scott Perretta and Zoo Station, fabulous food, drinks and fellow fans. It ended (or didn’t) with many of us retreating to the Vintage Plaza Hotel to hold an impromptu after-party by the lobby fireplace. Good times!
Below is a mosaic of some of my personal pictures from that night. To check out our @U2 event page from back then, click here.
And thanks to my colleagues (and the snow) for sparking these beautiful memories!

Wow, I remember that whole night. I clearly remember standing in the lobby of the hotel with a bunch of other U2 fans who were waiting on taxis to take us to the pub, it was like 3 hour wait so we walked there in 20 minutes.
Being from Chicago, I was with the group of people who are used to this and amazed at how it wasn’t really that bad. I remember standing with a group of people from Canada and we were marveling at all the people from LA, Florida etc who had never really seen snow before. Was another good memory of that trip.
I too remember the party at Kell’s and of U2 magnificent leg-ending show (still remember the shivers I got when I heard the Robert Oppenheimer quote leading into Love and Peace). It’s hard to believe it’s been 3 years – here’s to a great new year and more memories in 2009. Thanks Tassoula and stay warm.
