Piece of U2 history is in the bag

Recycling, charity and U2; what more could I ask for?

Indianapolis recently imploded the RCA Dome, former home of the Indianapolis Colts. Before the implosion, the air was let out of the billowy roof, and most of the material was salvaged.

Enter People for Urban Progress, which is recycling the roof fabric into messenger bags, clutches and wallets. The limited-edition bags are on sale at Sakura Urban, 425 Massachusetts Ave., in Indianapolis. They’re a bit pricey ($40 for the wallets, $80 for the clutches and up to $250 for the messenger bags), but more than half of the proceeds benefit Indy Parks.

Better yet, I have what I’m fairly certain is an indestructible memento of the first time I ever saw U2 in concert: Nov. 1, 1987, at what was then called the Hoosier Dome. Making it even more special: The Hoosier Dome also hosted the debut of the short-lived but much-loved Dalton Brothers that night.

The only thing that could make it better: If I could get the boys to sign my dome bag!

I was there too, that night. Closest thing I’ve ever had to a religious experience! But I”m not sure I’d shell out for this kind of a momento..

I think the JT tour was like that for a lot of us. I know it was the first time I saw them live (Worcester May 2 ’87), the vibe was worlds away from the other concerts of the day, which were much more like a shallow party. U2′s shows really made you feel like you were part of something special, and shared.
