(RED) iPod
Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. As Matt pointed out in this week’s Off the Record column, there was a U2-related item that Apple introduced today: a PRODUCT(RED) iPod nano.
According to the press release:
The new iPod nano gives users up to 24 hours of music playback or four hours of video playback and is available worldwide immediately in an 8GB model for just $149 and a 16GB model for just $199. Both models come in silver, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow, pink, (PRODUCT) RED and black.
The press release did not state any other specifics on what percentage goes to PRODUCT(RED) or such, and it appears that the PRODUCT(RED) site has not been updated with any new information. And, for those curious – Jack Johnson was there to perform…no sightings of Mr. The Edge.

pretty sure they’ve been selling product red nanos for a while. this is just an updated version.
I didn’t see any details about a PRODUCT(RED) Ipod nano on Apple’s website or in Steve’s keynote. He didn’t say anything about this. There’s a red Ipod nano but it doesn’t say it’s a PRODUCT(RED) one.
It was in the press release from Apple, which was linked in the blog story. No further details have been given other than what was in the press release.
Sounds like it’s not been promoted that well. Who’s doing U2’s marketing now?
Well it’s mention in Apple store:
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_nano?mco=MTE2NTY
But that’s it. I think it’s weird…maybe the PRODUCT(RED) brand is going out of fashion?
Anyway I didn’t expect Edge to show up, like to do they have new album itunes up yet!! Oh yeah their 25 years plus albums re-issues has been released!
the product red nano has been around since 2006. see oct. 2006 press release here. (that 2006 release said apple would contribute $10 from the sale of each red nano to the global fund).
sirensong – not arguing with your point about the marketing of it being good or bad, but i wouldn’t call it “u2 marketing” on this one as it is not even a u2 product.
