Scattered Thoughts: A Nice Congregation

Daniel Lanois’ May 28 appearance on the RTE television show The View is online and available to watch [click here for video]. The half hour conversation is about Daniel and not about U2, though host John Kelly does make an effort to get some U2 info out of Lanois, particularly about 20 minutes in.

Lanois pretty much reveals NOTHING about the in-progress U2 album, but does share some amusingly Lanois-esque descriptions of the interplay in the studio. When Larry, Adam, Edge, Bono, Lanois and Eno are in the room together, he says, “it’s a nice congregation.”

My favorite new Lanois-ism may be “passion is the only fuel we should operate by.” Really?! He seems so tranquil to me. Also, that doesn’t seem like good advice for Bono.

Anyway …

The most fascinating aspect of the interview, for me, was learning that Rick James (!) used to record demos in a studio that teenage Danny built in his mom’s basement.

Lanois also says that he learned about harmonies, also when he was a teenager, by recording gospel quartets traveling through town, in that same studio in his mom’s house.

In unrelated news, here’s a picture of the super-serious lead singer:

The white glove is very Jackson-esque, n’est-ce pas? :-)

Those white gloves might match Rick James’s outfit, too. They appear to be Bono’s “gardening” gloves.
