Scattered Thoughts: Waving That White Flag
Hey look: just in case U2 isn’t available to be the first band to play at the new Point Depot (the O2) in Dublin this December, it looks like the venue has a U2 cover band all lined up for a big gig around Christmas-time: Coldplay to be the first to play new O2 at the Point ?
(Just joking Chris Martin, you know I love like you.)
Is it at all possible that U2 could play a gig there earlier in December? Who knows what U2 has planned. We think we know their new album is coming out on November 18. We think we know it could possibly (maybe?) be called No Line On The Horizon. We know Daniel Lanois thinks it is grrrrreat. Other than that, what with this whole not talking thing U2 has going on right now, who knows for sure?
Laying low. This is an interesting tactic, U2. I like it. But I sort of wonder how you guys have managed to keep Bono quiet for such an extended period of time. Have you contemplated the repercussions of when you eventually let him loose? Will you ever be able to shut him up again? (I’m sure you guys thought this through.)
In any case, when you do all start chirping away again, I’m hoping (but doubting), that you’ll explain exactly when every single aspect of the music for Angels Too Tied To The Ground was put together. Of any of the “new” or “deluxe” tracks on the Boy, October and War remasters, this is the track that intrigues me the most. The liner notes say that it was originally recorded in 1982 with additional recording in May, 2008.
How many of the vocal parts on Angels Too Tied To The Ground are new? Maybe the “Oh ohh ohhhh” parts are from 1982? What about the drums? Piano? Guitar? Bass? If these vocals are new, why are some of them still in nonsensical Bono language and not English? Why is the song titled Angels Too Tied To The Ground? What does that mean?
Do you want to know how many more questions I have? (I don’t think so.) That’s all for now …

Very interesting & I agree with you on all of your points. I’m hoping U2 is laying low because they know we’ll piece everything together & spoil their big surprise – which hopefully is a REALLY GOOD surprise that rocks. But this laying low business is getting old. We seriously need a U2 interview that actually gives some information.
I really hate it that U2 seems not to be reopening The Point.
Ha ha. I love it when anyone mercilessly stomps on Coldplay. It lightens my darkest moods. Thanks!
[...] much to my annoyance, nothing is said about Angels Too Tied to the Ground . I know I’m not alone in my craving for more information on this song. I would really like to know what’s the story [...]
Is it just me, or does anyone else think the that the verse for Angels strongly resembles, “blessed are the meek who scratch in the dirt….”? Which in itself resembled, “listen to the rhythm that’s confusing you…”…
As far as the title of the song, I think it’s a play on Willie Nelson’s “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground.”
