The Man Who Wrote Bono’s World Cup Script

A lot of people think Bono wrote the words that he recites in that World Cup TV commercial that features “Magnificent” in the background as Bono talks.

But the script was written by a copywriter named Nicholas Sonderup:

Sitting in a Manhattan office and clad in a U.S.A. soccer jersey, Sonderup is justifiably thrilled that so many people who have seen the minute-long ad, in which Bono reads his script while the opening chords of U2′s “Magnificent” linger in the recesses, assume that the globally-conscious Irish rock god himself wrote it.

“I remember saying in the edit room, ‘People are going to think Bono wrote those words,’” says Sonderup, who played Division I soccer at Winthrop University.

That’s from a recent article on Fanhouse, and it’s a good read.

I want to write one day; this year I took debate and it was the best class I ever took! I also tried out to speak at my graduation next Wednesday and made it! I wrote the speech so I know it but now I’m nevous: how do I speak in front of everyone! It’s not really the speaking that’s bothering me so much as the dress I have to wear…plus my mom is doing my hair: God help me!

    Hey Shade
Be strong and courageous! Keep your confidence no matter what. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished – congratulations.

PS I was one that was certain Bono had written the ‘United’ speech, but not disappointed that he didn’t.

Thanks dude! Support is necessary for me at this point. MY FRIENDS ARE THREATENING TO HOLD SIGNS UP! IT’S CRAZY! I guess that’s what makes them friends…
You guys wanna know what absolutely rules (possibly even more than u2)? STANDING IN THE POURING RAIN!I just went out cause I felt like it. You know living in the city of rain you think I’d get bored of it but…I absolutely love it!

I’m so screwed!!! Graduation is in Wednesday and I’m speaking! That’s not the problem though: today I started to get sick. Swim team late nights and sleeping on a wet head of hair has returned to haunt me! I MUST get better! I refuse to stand up and speak in front of all my peers for possibly the only time (so this is a big chance for me) and have a runny, stuffy, disgusting nose! Wish me luck getting better. My family doesn’t use antibiotcs so I’m stuffing myself full of vitamins.

Can someone please explain why these ‘world cup commercials’ all feature U2 songs and images very heavily? Are they produced by FIFA or U2? Whats the point of the commercials? Promote football or U2? Or something else? I don’t get it. To me they all look like U2 promos.
