Two U2 Fans and a Tank Full of Gas in Death Valley

How great is this?

It’s news to me that someone put a big plaque/monument there where the Joshua tree used to stand – very cool. And it looked like a “U2ube” for fans to leave memories and/or write in a notebook? Excellent.

Death Valley is one of my favorite places on earth — maybe my favorite. And I feel blessed to have been able to see the Joshua tree when it was still standing.

Love that! Makes me want to go. Scott, you should lead a tour out there. ;)

I have always wanted to visit this site.

Even planned a trip once, but couldnt pull it off for work.

Did anyone post the GPS LAT/LON coordinates. It would just be a big help.

    Who’s the chick? She’s tasty…mmm.

Someone should start a U2 Pilgrimage World Tour, including Mt. Temple in Ireland, Red Rocks, the Joshua Tree site, Berlin etc…

Awesome! I need to go there! Great video, and it’s nice to see that some fans are dedicated to remembering the Joshua Tree!

Love this! I so want to make this trip. He did such a good job with this video.

Call me Debbie Downer but the vid looked like a car commercial. It did bring back fond memories of my own trip to the JT, though.

Oh, and plz don’t post GPS coordinates anywhere on the internet. Part of the journey is FINDING it and the ranger said that if the spot becomes too popular the plaque will probably get pulled.

I completely agree about the GPS coordinates. The adventure and experience far outweighs the destination, and all we need is another part-time U2 fan to take the plaque. (any word on the Popmart banner that vanished in Greece??)

The video was well done, and it’s strange to see the ‘development’ since I was there in 1997- at the time, just some rocks spelling out ‘U2′. Amazing!

It’s no secret that Death Valley is the location- look at the video title! If you want to remake the cover is 3 of your friends, pay a visit to Zabriskie Point, the same location as the “You Oughta Know” video by Alanis Morissette, and maybe a car commercial a while back.

Does anyone pay homage to any other U2 sites? The dock on the cover of October? The place where the New Year’s Day video was filmed? Unforgettable Fire’s Moydrum castle ?

to heck with the tree — i’m going to find the girl…

He did a great job on the video!

I also agree, please do not post the GPS coordinates or any other specific location info on the location of the site. Half the fun is finding the location and that would be too bad if the plaque had to get pulled or worse…stolen. I didn’t know there was even one there. That’s so cool!

“Does anyone pay homage to any other U2 sites?”

I took the same photos from the ATYCLB cover at game F35 in Terminal F of CDG airport!

But when I tried stealing someone else’s bag on the carousel like in the music video, I got kicked out ;-)

Actually, the coords have been available on the net for a couple years now. A google earth .kmz is out there and pretty easy to find. Any fan who is wanting to visit the spot should start there. I made the drive out from South Dakota a couple of summers ago, and found it. A magnificent experience in every way.

  15. Jennifer 21 April 2009 at 5:49 am permalink

Why would they pull the plaque just because the site became popular?
I mean, any idiot can steal it at any time . . . it just takes one person who’s willing, to know where it is. That logic seems kind of lame.

However, this VIDEO rocks. I loved the very end, especially.
Congrats on a job well done.

It does make me want to go out there!!

my son, wife and I will be heading on this trip this summer to find the tree.. I located someone who provided details on exactly where the tree is.. I have been wanting to do this trip for quite some time, so wish us luck…

The question is, do we ever really find what we are looking for……………..

  18. David 21 April 2009 at 9:21 am permalink

I may be incorrect ,however I believe While there are more than one deserts and more than one joshua tree in the US, the ” Joshua Tree Monument park” is located in the high desert of the state of California ,where the original tree of u2`s pilgrimage stood.

  19. Mark 21 April 2009 at 9:35 am permalink

I have taken two trips out there from the UK to find the tree and each time got a bit closer. Last time I must have got within a hundred yards of it, but found a similar tree which I mistook for the actual one. It’s in the most breathtakingly beautiful place and I will get there finally later this year. The real fascination for me would be to know the story behind the plaque.

  20. Scott 21 April 2009 at 11:31 am permalink

    Mark,

I admire your perseverence in making TWO trips to find it. I can assure you that if you were within a hundred yards there would be no mystery to where it is! :-) However, with it now on the ground, I’m not sure I’d be able to find it if I hadn’t been there before.

Good luck, and hope you find what you’re looking for!

Some friends and I are taking a trip out there on Saturday (inspired by the above video). We’ll keep you posted. :)

I have a U2 penpal(we met thru the old Propaganda magazine almost 20 years ago)in San Francisco and my sister and I met up with her one year.We camped in
Yosemite, stayed at Lake Tahoe and Reno then drove to Mono Lake and finally
ended up in Bodie, the ghost town on the cover of The Joshua Tree.Amazing trip
and the scenery is mind-blowing.Highly recommend it for anyone thinking of a
    vacation ‘In God’s Country’.

  23. Wesley 21 April 2009 at 3:05 pm permalink

So great, Elaine! We wanted to include the ghost town before we realized it was in Bodie which is too far to drive this trip. But soon.

Have you seen this? It’s like a travelguide for U2-important sites. Not exhaustive by any means, but still a cool resource.

Yeah, no desire to go stand in the middle of a desert, but I probably would go through with it if that chick was along for the ride.
