U2 Asked to Headline Glastonbury 2011

NME is reporting that Glastonbury Festival organizer, Michael Eavis, has confirmed 2 out of the 3 headline acts and he is waiting from U2 to make it 3 out of 3 for next year’s Glastonbury Festival. Eavis would like U2 to headline on Friday, June 24 next year.

Looking at next year’s tour itinerary, that would fall between Anaheim, California and East Lansing, Michigan dates as they have a seven day break in the tour at that point.

I think you are getting your June and July mixed up. Minneapolis is July 24th not June. The first thing I noticed as a Brit when the revised US dates were announced was the gap in June between June 18th and 26th. The Friday at Glasto as you say is Friday 24th June so that does leave the opportunity for them to do this, as things stand.

    Here’s hoping!

Wow – Minneapolis was going to be right AFTER Glastonbury this year and we Minneapolitans were afraid the band would be exhausted. Now we’ll be the warm up for Glastonbury and the closer for next summer’s USA dates; I expect they’ll be in fine fettle. Bet they won’t be hanging around to sign autographs after the show, though.

As a Glastonbury regular, this “announcement” is the worst news…not because U2 will be playing of course but because I can see there being a huge demand by U2 fans for tickets next year. I remember the year it was announced that OASIS [they were very popular once!] would be headlining before tickets went on sale. It resulted in a festival full of OASIS fans, a lot of whom cared little for the rest of the festival/acts. Made for a very strange atmosphere plus resulted in a huge exodus following their set !!
