U2 Button Set: Where to Get Them

UPDATE: If you’re having trouble finding the buttons, please read the comments on this thread and stay tuned for updates.

————

Still haven’t purchased the Boy, October, or War remixes? But you’re planning to? Okay. Or maybe you’re a collecting completist and don’t want to have a hole in your collection?

This post is for you.

Universal Music is distributing a set of four U2 buttons that’s free when you buy any one of the remastered CDs at select stores in the U.S. There are only 5,000 button sets to go around, and — this is kinda cool — with one or two exceptions, they’re not available at any of the Big Box music stores. You have to go support your independent music store to get the buttons. The full list of stores that has or had, since supplies are limited is available below. But first, here’s what they look like.

I checked one of the Newbury Comics near where I work and the manager said they haven’t received the buttons…hmmmm

  3. Brian McMillin 25 July 2008 at 9:02 am permalink

Similarly, I checked with ZZZ Records in Des Moines and they weren’t aware of receiving such buttons — but were going to check.

  4. Dorenda 25 July 2008 at 9:59 am permalink

Just checked all the Zia Record Stores in Phoenix and they have no clue. Looks like the buttons made it to Ebay before the stores.

  5. Tassoula 25 July 2008 at 10:48 am permalink

Thanks for posting this, Matt! Just got my set with my new copy of War!

  6. Erika 25 July 2008 at 11:19 am permalink

I’d have to drive 3 hours to Chicago to get them….I’m seriously considering doing it.

where can I get my buttons in New Jersey/NY area..

I brought the three re-issue albums yesterday and would appreciate on how to receive the buttons

Didn’t I buy these buttons back in 1983 at the local head shop for 99 cents a piece? :P

Maria… I live in Montreal as well, and I ordered my Deluxe Editions from Amazon.com. I was wondering what HMV charged you, ’cause @ Amazon… Boy = $19.99…. October/War = $23.99.

WOW, my old old record store in Iowa is listed!!! Go Record Collector!!!!

Thanks a million for the heads up!!!

I went to my local record store this afternoon and got lucky just like Bajagirl.

I bought all three vinyls, and the manager gave me 3 sets of buttons plus a poster too!!!

And FYI – I think people who are working on the inside of these stores might be stealing the buttons. The store that I went to said that they had around 30 sets left, and I saw a mini button ad that said it was available on 7/22/08. If your store claims they don’t have them, I’d be very suspicious and start asking the store manager/owner what happened to them, and show them the list of stores who is suppose to have them. It’s sad that these buttons are available on ebay so quickly. Something just doesn’t smell right.

I got a set today when my brother bought Boy and October for me on vinyl, but they said it was only one set per person. Which is why I’m going back tomorrow for War. :) Didn’t hear anything about posters, though.

mfkg, if you’re talking abou the Zia stores in Phoenix, they have no clue. Already checked them out. :)

Dorenda, thanks for the heads up. I’m in Tucson but I’ll call before I go.

  16. mkfg 27 July 2008 at 7:59 pm permalink

So I called and they, too had no idea. *scratches head*

  17. Dorenda 27 July 2008 at 8:13 pm permalink

mfkg, I called today and one of the stores up here said to expect them next week. So keep trying. :) Good luck.

I have been to a couple of Newbury Comics asking for the buttons. No one there has a clue about them at all. Another well executed promotional item…

  19. U2isABLE 28 July 2008 at 6:53 am permalink

I spoke with the Newbury Comics manager yesterday (Sunday) at their Kingston, MA location. The Universal rep in the area called the store to see if the buttons arrived – they hadn’t. The manager gave the Universal rep the contact info for the Newbury Comics home office. To the best of his knowledge, the Universal rep was quite disappointed that there was a breakdown in shipping and communication between the home office and the various stores. Keep checking with the stores as I’m sure Universal is trying to get this situation resolved for the promotion they’re running.

This impacts ALL Massachusetts Newbury Comics locations.

To Dan and Boston Guy. Newbury Comics will have a coupon in this weeks eblast that goes to the subscribers of their newletter (you can sign up at http://www.newburycomics.com) that will get you a pin set if you buy a remastered U2. The pins arrived late at pretty much all the accounts, so a few of them are probably holding them until this week to put in the new release newsletters that they send to customers. The Newbury stores that you visited didnt know about the pins because they are being held at home office until the eblast goes out. All Newbury locations should have pins Tuesday July 29th…

  21. mandi 28 July 2008 at 8:55 am permalink

By the way…I am the Universal Rep for the Boston area…and the problem had nothing to do at all with Newbury Comics Home Offices or the stores. The pins shipped late, arrived late and no one told us that this blog was being posted, otherwise we would have notified the stores the status on the pins so they would all be aware that they were on the way and could have told anyone that was coming in looking for them how to get them. We thought, since it would be in the eblast that is going out today that no one would inquire about them until July 29th. Again, I am very sorry about the confusion, but want to let you know that it has nothing to do with Newbury Comics…They were excited about this promotion because they are always trying to get cool things for their customers!

  22. Dan 28 July 2008 at 10:24 am permalink

Thank you Mandi for the GOOD NEWS!! Can’t wait to get a set of my own!

  23. mandi 28 July 2008 at 10:40 am permalink

Again, so sorry you were out there looking before they hit the stores. Is there a way you can email me to let me know that you got them ok?

  24. m2 28 July 2008 at 11:16 am permalink

I’ve blocked out all the listings for Newbury Comics per Adam’s (of Universal) request. Mandi – thanks so much for jumping in the conversation and helping out. We really appreciate that!!

  25. mandi 28 July 2008 at 12:45 pm permalink

Just spoke with Newbury Home Office. Because of the mix up with the pins getting to Newbury Home Office after the street date, they are not going to require a coupon to get the pins. Each store should receive 15-20 sets of pins, so don’t wait too long to get yours. Pins should arrive at all of the locations sometime tomorrow. (you might want to call the location you are visiting before you go to make sure they have received them-shipments arrive all though the day)). Just purchase one of the remastered CDs and ask them for your pin set! To the fans – sorry for all the confusion, and to Newbury Comics – thank you for working so hard to fix this for the fans and always being so great to work with!

  26. Peter 29 July 2008 at 7:47 am permalink

What about all of us who have already purchased the remasters at Newbury Comics? How can we get our pins? We stepped up and bought on day one, and now those who waited to buy will get the pins with purchase??? Can’t we who have already purchased simply show our sales receipt and get the pins set that way!!!!!

Hope Mr Mullen doesn’t have to e-mail an apology for this one, too!

Oh man I can’t believe Amoeba in California got dissed! I only shop indie, I never illegal download and if you were local you’d know why I will not shop at Rasputin and can’t get to El Cerrito. Dang! I am so crazy about buttons (Ironically, I even buy custom buttons from a guy PotatoPotato that works at the Amoeba in SF, he is so cool) and I am heartbroken. I feel so bad for so many fans in this thread! Ah, but you know: it’s a big planet and you can’t blame the fellas or the people who work so hard for them. BTW, when I am on the East Coast, I love Newbury Comics and TONS of love for Music Millenium in the great NW! Okay, back to crying now…

  29. 40andFan since Day One 29 July 2008 at 3:06 pm permalink

Ok, CALIFORNIA: Mod Lang in El Cerrito does have them if you buy the deluxe versions, I don’t know if I wasn’t paying attention in 3rd grade, but I was hoping to get the buttons with the regular reissues! Hey, I’m broke like no one’s business! BUT! They are a great store (I’ve been shopping with them since they were on University Ave in Berkeley) and they DO have the buttons … I know they do mail order, but I don’t know if THIS applies. Just trying to give hope to someone if they want to TRY! modlang.com, but I’d call if I were you: (510) 486-1880. Good luck!!

  30. Dorenda 29 July 2008 at 3:40 pm permalink

Sean, these are US promo buttons only. There is a European set and and a US set.

For those who’ve bought their remastered stuff already, try calling the store back and see if they will give you the buttons. That’s what I did here and they had not problem giving me the buttons even though I bought the remastered stuff days before.

  31. Peter 29 July 2008 at 5:41 pm permalink

    Hello All in metro Boston,

I picked up my button set at Newbury Comics in Avon today. I had purchased the remastered sets last week…before the buttons were even announced. I went back to the store, showed my sales receipt and received my button set….

Should work for all those who bought last week.

Now if it was that easy getting tickets in 2009…

  32. mandi 30 July 2008 at 8:27 am permalink

Peter, you should be able to bring in your receipt to the Newbury you bought them from and as long as they still have pins left they will give you a set (each store only received 15-20 sets, so don’t wait too long!

  33. Peter 30 July 2008 at 8:41 am permalink

    mandi,

already got my set in Avon. Thanks! How does one become a rep for Universal? I’ve been a rep in the traditional industries for 20 years…Universal sounds a lot more exciting!!!

  34. Dan 30 July 2008 at 10:52 am permalink

    Hi Mandi and Sherry,

I just got my pin set at Newbury Comics in North Dartmouth. The had maybe 15 to 20 sets there. Thanks for getting the word out Sherry and thanks to Mandi for getting the pins to Newbury Comics for us! And the set I just received will NEVER be on eBay!

    Thanks,
    Dan

  35. mandi 30 July 2008 at 12:03 pm permalink

Glad you guys are finding the pins sets out there and sorry for those of you who had to make an extra trip back…hopefully we will have more added value items for the next set of remastered CDs!
Peter, Universal is great. Most people get in through interning, I got in through years of blood, sweat and tears in record retail. Working with bands like U2 and their fans is amazing and I am thankful for this job every day!!!

For those in the Atlanta/Decatur area:

I tried today (8/09) to get them at the Decatur CD store that is listed. No such luck. The staff there didn’t really know what I was talking about at first, and then they couldn’t remember if they had them or not. Then, one of the clerks thought that they might have them, but didn’t really know where they are or what happened to them. Talk about organization. Overall they were more interested in playing on their computers then actually trying to help.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up trying to sell them online. This store has quite a “business” for selling things on eBay as well.
