American Idol must have found some kind of loophole…
Mary J. Blige performed an abbreviated version of “One” with 3rd place contestant Elliott Yamin last night. They omitted the second verse. This was the first time I’ve heard a U2 song on American Idol, not that I watch it obsessively or anything like that. The performance was 10% Yamin, 90% Blige. And, you know, either you like Mary’s version or you don’t. The easy-to-please audience at the Kodak Theater ate it up.

Speaking of “One” - Did anyone else see the ABC Network promo using “One” last night? I’m probably being idealistic, but there was something heartbreaking about the song that has stood for so many great causes being used to promote a network. Any one have scoop as to how this came about? Is there anything redeeming about it?
Thank you, Lisa - - my thoughts exactly!
I could not believe that a band that has turned down millions (thankfully!) by companies to use their songs (both Streets and Even Better Than the Real Thing) would now allow that song for commercial use.
I wonder if they lost some kind of control over it, since Mary is allowed to kind of prostitute it as hers, now.
“Sorry, bitter, party of one, (ahem!), your table is now available . . .”
I’d love to know if anyone has any details on this, too . . .
There’s a discussion on this going on in our Forum, if you want to join in…..

The Blige version of “One” sang on American Idol the other night was definitely forgettable.
I also got my hopes up for a brief moment that U2 would show up and start singing it, too, but I quickly realized that U2 is too big a band to come out during a variety show on Idol.
