Another Delay for Spider-Man

In case you missed this: Evan Rachel Wood has pulled out of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark due to a “scheduling conflict,” forcing the role of Mary Jane to be recast. Rolling Stone is reporting that the Broadway production budget has allegedly grown to $50 million, making it the most expensive show on Broadway ever.

Variety reports that previews of the show may begin towards the end of summer with its opening around Halloween.

OK, so is anyone shocked that this production is going to be the MOST expensive EVER? Ha! Not me! It would not be U2 if it weren’t big and expensive, right?

I think Bono and Edge should distance themselves from this project; it’s getting embarrassing.

I disagree with the sentiments here. U2 has a habit of biting off large projects, but time and again, they have been successful when they have thought biggest. From the enormous stage risks of Zoo TV, PopMart and 360 to the personal risks of taking on African debt (Bono) and New Orleans music revival (Edge), U2’s biggest successes have been times when they did the thing that no-one expected. PopMart in Sarajevo is worthy of the opening scene of a U2 Movie, Playing the Superbowl after 9/11, mixing it up during live aid, doing dance versions of their music, etc. By Contrast, the hard-hitting rock ‘n’ roll sound of Spiderman and the broad general appeal of the subject matter should make this not only a browdway-worthy risk, but potentially a Hollywood worthy risk also.

I do hope the Soundtrack LP is a ‘U2 and friends’ Album and not an ‘Original Broadway Cast’. I will buy it either way though….
