End of an era for iconic towers in U2′s Pride video

The Irish Independent reports that the twin chimneys of the ESB oil burning plant in Dublin puffed smoke for the last time yesterday after almost 40 years in operation. They are the second tallest chimneys in Ireland.

The towers were featured in U2′s “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” video as well as the advertisement for the Bank of Ireland’s sponsorship of the GAA football championship and postcards of the capital city.

In 2008, there was an appeal to have the twin chimneys included in the Record of Protected Structures. That attempt failed. The fate of the towers remains unknown at this time.

That’s kind of sad! Weird to be sentimental about a couple of smoke stacks, but that’s what the Pride video will do to you!

They’re also in the beginning of Rattle and Hum…

I love that you can see them clearly from the back yard of Mt. Temple - it makes you wonder what goes through their heads when they see them. Maybe it’s just part of everyday Dublin for them, but maybe they’re an icon of something more. I know that I felt a bond with the band as I pilgrimaged through Dublin and took note of every time the stacks would surface on the horizon.
