Lee DeWyze’s First Single: ‘Beautiful Day’ (AUDIO)
Here in the U.S., American Idol wrapped up tonight with gruff-voiced Lee DeWyze winning the title over indie/folk rocker Crystal Bowersox. (I liked both of them, but would’ve picked Crystal if it was my choice.)
In most years, the Idol winner’s first single is a new song written specifically for the occasion. But Lee’s first single will be a cover of U2’s “Beautiful Day.” Like I said, I like Lee … but this song just isn’t right for him. And sadly, as you listen to the single below, it sounds at the beginning like they gave him a karaoke track to sing over. Sheesh. Poor guy.
See, that’s just not right. “Hallelujah” was much more up his alley. Oh, well.
Postscript, May 29: In an interview with MTV, DeWyze explains why his first single is a U2 cover:
Q: This season, you also have a cover song as your first single. How did you feel about that, and how did you choose that particular song?
A: I like that song a lot. It’s a really good song. Is it something that’s necessarily in my genre? No. But again, there were songs on the table, and that was the one I thought would represent the moment the best, because this year they didn’t have an original song written for this specifically. Whatever the reasons for that are — there’s reasons. [Laughs.] I don’t know all the ups and downs of the behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s just been a big game of “play by the rules.” If it was up to me, there were certain things I would have done differently.
In other words, it sounds like the folks at Idol didn’t give him too many choices.

To me, Lee’s version is lacking that passion that drives U2’s hit songs.(its also lacking the most important thing to me, Bono!) I really don’t like his version of the song. I’m too much of a U2 fan! lol The song is too well known, bad idea on Idol’s part. But at least U2 make some money off this!
