Steve Lillywhite lobbies for American Idol gig

Could Steve Lillywhite be the next Simon Cowell? He’s certainly trying, and is actually making a pretty convincing case for himself:

“I have spent 30 years telling Bono what to do” - love it!

Cowell announced last month that this is his final season as the American Idol judge that so many viewers love to hate. And Steve L. has been talking about replacing him on Twitter, making the video you see above, and there’s even a Facebook page:

Steve Lillywhite Should be the Replacement for Simon on American Idol

So the question for you, U2 fans, is this: Would you like to see Steve judging American Idol? Would you be more inclined to watch if he did? Comments are open!

I *love* this idea, but am thoroughly confused as to why Steve would WANT the job.

It IS relevant to hope that, should he be chosen, it would only HELP the quality of pop ‘rubbish’ that tries to pass as music that tends to come from that show (with some exceptions) . . . but would Steve’s philosophy mesh well with the ’strong arm’ that controls the show? Do we really think Steve Lillywhite and Clive Davis share a ‘vision’ of what good music is? Feeling like ‘no’ is the answer, combined with knowing who’d win that argument is what I fear from Lillywhite’s involvement with the show. Even if Lillywhite finds a great talent, then what? Will we have to ask Clive?

Shoot! I hope he doesn’t get it, ’cause if he does, I’d have to watch the dang show!

    Agreed, apancella! xD
But, hey, maybe the show would be better with him on there. I’d be willing to give him a shot!

well…i initially thought that if Simon left there’d be no show. But this?! I would watch it for sure. I’m a little surprised that Lillywhite wants the gig…although part of me isn’t. I’m surprised because he does mostly bands, and AI is mostly a solo singer’s show. But, obviously this show would keep Lillywhite in the spotlight, and he would elevate the credibility of the show in a lot of respects. This show needs and lacks credibility. I’ve lost interest, but Steve could make me take a 2nd look.

I hope to god he doesn’t take/get the job. He’s got real talent unlike the rest. He worked with The Pogues for f**ks sake! From speed and Guiness to slippers and MOR crap.
