Video: If U2 changes the 360 tour opener…

In all the discussions about why “Breathe” was removed from the main tracklist for the Pasadena DVD, some fans have theorized that U2 has decided it’s not happy with that song as the concert opener.

It’s interesting, but I don’t think it’s true. But true or not, the fact is that U2 very well could be planning to change the opening sequence of the tour in 2010.

To what? Well, one has put together a video that shows one idea: U2 enters the stadium as the “Fish Out of Water” remix of “Get On Your Boots” us playing on the PA system, and then launches into “Boots” as the first song. Not sure I see it happening this way, but the video’s cool nonetheless and I like this “Boots” remix better than the album version. So, have a look and leave your thoughts in the comments.

I kinda figured they left Breathe off because it was badly recorded and mixed…it sounded awful on YouTube, maybe they just don’t want to take the time to go back and fix it, or actually be open about making changes to an official video release.

I’d miss Kingdom/Breathe, but I agree this is a much stronger opener…perhaps drop Unforgettable Fire or With or Without You and put Breathe into their place?

I love Breathe as the opener but I agree w/ Stuart the mixing is off and it doesn’t have the oomph that the recorded version does.

The guitar needs to be louder and maybe bring some of the piano in for a fuller sound and it would be better?

I always thought that Breathe was a terrible choice for the show opener. I think Breathe was the second best song on the album, and it deserved a “Walk On” style placement towards the end of the first set.

But it would be cool if they opened with a brand new song this time around… surprise!

I kind of like this, it would be high energy but, it’s basically been done before on the Elevation tour.

I was t the Rose Bowl show, and the sound for Breathe was pretty awful. It had a lot of echo through the soundsystem. Larry’s drumming sounded a beat behind in the mix to what he was playing. But I don’t see why they couldn’t save the sound somehow through studio tricks.

The band never lost the beat because they probably could keep it together through their ear monitors. The first part of Get on Your Boots had the bad echo too, and then it got better somehow.

i don’t have the feeling that this will be a typical 3rd leg, and agree that there are grounds for significant changes. Even though I’m very frustrated about the Breathe film issue, I am in favor of moving it. Boots is the only song they can get any liftoff from to start the shows.

I’m still disappointed about the Breathe thing. I totally loved the song as an opener and will miss it very much. A 360 show isn’t the same without Breathe, it just doesn’t feel right. And I honestly can’t understand why they don’t find a way to correct the technical problems for the DVD, technology can do everything these days. IF the sound really is so bad, why do they put it on the DVD as bonus track and not leave it off completely?

should go ahead with make over and start with Fez … Boots as set closer or encore

Leaving Breathe off the DVD is a money grab hoping people buy the bonus package. If the quality was poor or they were unhappy with the performance they would have left it off the bonus DVD as well. If they are going to change things around how about opening with Unknown Caller (has great sign along to get the crowd going) and boot Boots from the entire set list replacing it with Fez or Winter.

They opened up the 2nd Boston show with Magnificent. I believe that was the only show where they did that. Have to say I was pleased with that choice over Breathe.

Breathe is prolly my fave song on album. When they took the stage in Chi, I was so excited I actually dind’t realize they were even singing Breathe until about 30 seconds in. I agree that they should still play out but not right out of the chute. I don’t really have a suggestion to replace it. Hell, they could play the hokey-pokey for all I care, I’d be just as excited all the same.

I think there is one thing that we are all over looking here in the Breathe debate. The intro to
Breathe is “The Kingdom” a new song that has not officially been released yet and is probably planned to be on the next album. They don’t want to include a brand new song on the DVD. I don’t think you can have Breathe without this intro song, just my opinion. As an extra on the DVD, they can just cut right to the drum solo beginning, but you can’t start a concert DVD like that. I think the DVD will begin with “The future needs a big kiss” tape intro echoing throughout the stadium and they’ll launch into Boots.
