Who Needs A Playlist?
While traveling to Durham for the U2 Conference yesterday, Jet Blue had a wonderful selection of satellite music for me to take advantage of. For a U2 fan who didn’t feel like hitting “random” on her personal music device, the airline’s XM Radio did a great job in finding obvious and obscure tunes by U2 and those they’ve affiliated with in some way that made the flight feel quick. Here’s what was played:
Satellite of Love - Lou Reed
Dance Away - Roxy Music (I know, it wasn’t with Eno at the time, but still reminded me of Eno anyway)
Uprising - Muse
Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
Two Hearts Beat As One / Pride / Elevation - U2
Ziggy Stardust / Fame - David Bowie
Giant Steps - John Coltrane
Should I Stay or Should I Go - The Clash
I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas
I’ll Survive - BB King
Paint It Black - Rolling Stones
Alison - Elvis Costello
What’s Goin’ On - Marvin Gaye
Barbara Allen - Dave Evans
Yup, the Bluegrass channel had Dave Evans, and thankfully this banjo outlaw wasn’t confused with the other.
One other song that I listened to was Procul Harem’s “Whiter Shade of Pale.” And after listening to the haunting organ in that classic song, I am convinced that this song’s organ was what inspired the organ in “Moment of Surrender.”
So, thank you XM radio for setting the mood for me to spend the weekend with a few hundred others discussing the cultural, philosophical, social, and artistic relevancy of U2!
