“Women of the future hold the big revelations”
Each year around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th. Hundreds of events occur not just on this day but throughout the month to mark the economic, political, and social achievements of women.
U2 has always been a band that recognized and supported the achievements of women. There is no better example of this than Bono’s special bond with Ugandan nurse and AIDS activist, Agnes Nyamayarwo. After losing her 6-year-old son to the disease due to lack of treatment, she herself received life saving treatment paid for by Bono. She then went on to work tirelessly against the spread of HIV/AIDS with the organization, TASO.
The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom is asking people to nominate a woman who has inspired them in their lives and to give a brief description of what their achievements have been and how they have inspired you.
We know the impact Agnes has had on Bono’s life. He started his Make Poverty History campaign , ONE.org, because of her. He then took Agnes on the Heart of America tour to show people in the United States the real face of AIDS. Agnes told us all her story in her own words what AIDS what doing to her country and why she would not stop until this disease was gone. She touched the hearts of so many that heard her words in person or viewed the documentary that soon followed.
There are so many deserving women who should receive this honor - many whose names we are very familiar with. Bono has often called his friend Agnes “the quiet storm.” She may not be a name everyone knows, but she has certainly made a positive impact in this world.
If you met Agnes when she spoke at the U2 Conference or saw Bono’s heartfelt dedication of the song “One” to his friend on the 360 Tour in Raleigh, North Carolina in October, 2009, I invite you to share how Agnes may have inspired you.
To nominate Agnes Nyamayarwo for the Top 100 Most Inspirational Women , please go here.
Results will be published by the Guardian on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2011.
For Agnes….”the quietest storm that ever blew into town”

The nominations for the top 100 Most Inspiring Women have now closed. Thanks to all who voted. Agnes would like to thank @U2 for all of the support that it has given her and the ladies of the Mulago Positive Women’s Network. Whether you saw Agnes speak at the U2 Conference and shared her story or bought one of the MPWN’s handmade BONO bracelets or other jewelry, you have made a difference in their lives. They will be forever grateful.
